Eco-Village Berliner Platz
Der Rundgang durch die Essener City Nord beginnt auf dem Verkehrskreisel am Berliner Platz, der an die autogerechte Stadt der 1960er Jahre erinnert, aber erst 2010 eröffnet wurde und mehr einer Zentrifuge gleicht, als dass er ein Zentrum bildet.
Der Platz wird zur Präsentationsfläche von Initiativen im Umfeld neuer Zukunftsperspektiven. Auf der Verkehrsinsel, die zum Projekt durch eine Ampelanlage zugänglich gemacht und von der Stadtgesellschaft zurückerobert wird, eröffnet das Eco-Village, ein Dorf, in dem das Thema Kreislaufwirtschaft genauso diskutiert wird wie Fragen nach der Verkehrswende, erneuerbaren Energien oder einer ökologisch sinnvollen Nahrungsmittelproduktion.
Dazu ziehen in das Eco-Village verschiedene Initiativen aus Essen ein, die zusammen mit Künstler:innen ihre Perspektiven und Projekte vorstellen. Von Start-up-Unternehmen wie Futur2k, das kreislauffähige Raumkörper zwischen Tiny House und Baumodul entwickelt, über das städtische Konzept zur Rückbesiedlung der Innenstadt durch Insekten bis hin zu künstlerischen Initiativen wie Performance Electrics, die Kunststrom aus Holzgas in einem umgebauten Kohlekraftwerk produzieren, werden verschiedene wissenschaftliche sowie utopische, private und öffentliche, ökonomische wie spekulative Perspektiven vorgestellt. Der Berliner Platz wird dabei zum Treffpunkt der Stadtgesellschaft, die gemeinsam über ihre Zukunft diskutiert.

The tour of Essen’s City-Nord begins at the traffic roundabout on Berliner Platz. Although reminiscent of the car-friendly city of the 1960s, it was only opened in 2010 and resembles more of a centrifuge than a centre.
The location is made a showcase for initiatives working towards new perspectives for the future. Here, a traffic island – a space that has been reclaimed by urban dwellers and can be accessed via a traffic light system – becomes home to the Eco-Village, a village where issues around the circular economy are discussed along with those concerning the shift to sustainable transportation, renewable energies, and environmentally responsible food production.
A number of Essen-based initiatives have moved to the Eco-Village and are presenting their ideas and projects in collaboration with artists: from start-up companies such as Futur2k, which develops recyclable spatial bodies situated somewhere between a Tiny House and a building module; to the urban concept of repopulating the inner city with insects and artistic initiatives such as Performance Electrics, which produces synthetic electricity from wood gas in a converted coal-fired power plant –Eco-Village presents a wide range of scientific and utopian, private and public, economic, and speculative approaches. Berliner Platz becomes the meeting place at which an urban community collectively discusses its future.
